USB-C: seven things you can do with this port that you probably didn’t know
Published on 2026-03-05
The USB-C port has become the connection standard in most modern electronic devices. Smartphones, laptops, tablets, monitors and even handheld consoles now include it as their main connector. Its popularity is due to the fact that it is reversible, fast and extremely versatile.
However, many users only use it to charge their devices, when in reality this port can do much more. These are some of the most useful — and lesser-known — functions offered by USB-C.
1. Connect your laptop to a monitor with a single cable
Many modern laptops can send video through the USB-C port using the DisplayPort Alt Mode standard. This means that with a simple USB-C to HDMI or DisplayPort adapter or cable, you can connect your computer directly to a monitor or TV.
In some cases, the laptop can even be powered at the same time if a compatible dock is used.
2. Charge different devices with a single charger
One of the biggest advantages of USB-C is the USB Power Delivery (PD) system, which allows different power levels depending on the connected device.
Thanks to this, the same charger can be used to charge a smartphone, a tablet, wireless earbuds or even a laptop. However, it is important to check that the charger has enough power (45 W, 65 W or more) if you plan to use it with laptops.
3. Transfer files much faster
Depending on the version of the standard, USB-C can reach very high transfer speeds. With USB 3.2 or USB4, for example, large files can be moved in just a few seconds.
This is especially useful for photographers, content creators or anyone working with video or large photo libraries.
4. Connect multiple devices with a hub
Another underused feature is the ability to use a USB-C hub to expand a device’s connectivity. These small adapters allow you to add extra USB ports, an SD card reader, HDMI output, Ethernet connection or even simultaneous charging.
In practice, they turn an ultrathin laptop with few ports into a much more complete workstation.
5. Use your phone as a computer on a monitor
Some smartphones compatible with technologies such as Samsung DeX or Android desktop mode can connect to a monitor via USB-C and work like a computer.
With a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, the phone can become a small portable workstation.
6. Connect ultra-fast external storage
External SSDs with USB-C connections offer much higher speeds than old mechanical hard drives. This allows you to edit video directly from the external drive, make backups in minutes or carry large amounts of data conveniently.
For many professionals, they have become an essential tool.
7. Reduce the number of cables on your desk
One of the biggest advantages of the USB-C ecosystem is simplification. With a good dock or hub, you can connect a monitor, keyboard, mouse, storage and power using a single cable to your laptop.
The result is a much cleaner, tidier and easier-to-manage desk.
A standard designed for the future
The European Union has also promoted USB-C as the charging standard for most electronic devices, which will further accelerate its adoption in the coming years.
For users, this means fewer chargers, greater compatibility between devices and a much simpler technology ecosystem to use. Because, in the end, the best technology is the one that works without complications.
