Experts warn of the impact of short-form social media videos on attention and brain development

Compulsive consumption of short-form videos on platforms such as TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts may trigger brain mechanisms similar to those involved in other addictive behaviors, according to psychologist Silvia Morales, a specialist in child, adolescent and adult mental health at Hospiten Roca Hospital in Maspalomas.

Morales explains that constant exposure to this type of content encourages the pursuit of immediate rewards and can become a way of avoiding activities that require effort, concentration or dealing with uncomfortable situations. This pattern is closely linked to procrastination, as people often replace important tasks with fast and pleasurable stimuli.

From a neurobiological perspective, short videos activate the brain’s reward system. When a task is perceived as difficult or unpleasant, areas associated with fear and anxiety become more active, while regions responsible for impulse control reduce their activity. As a result, the brain tends to favor behaviors that provide instant gratification, such as scrolling through social media.

Children are particularly vulnerable

Experts stress that children and adolescents are among the most vulnerable groups because their brains are still developing. During this stage, neural connections are continuously shaped by the stimuli they receive.

Research has linked excessive consumption of fast-paced digital content to changes in brain regions involved in planning, emotional regulation and impulse control. Continuous exposure to highly stimulating content may slow the maturation of these functions, increasing impulsive behavior and reducing self-regulation abilities.

In addition, the constant stream of short videos trains the brain to expect immediate rewards, making slower-paced activities such as reading, studying and academic work less appealing.

Effects on learning and communication

Morales notes that the constant influx of information in very short periods can overload working memory, making it more difficult to process and retain information over the long term.

In younger users, this may affect language development and communication skills. The psychologist also warns against using mobile devices to calm boredom or tantrums, a practice sometimes referred to as a “digital pacifier,” which may hinder children’s ability to develop their own strategies for managing frustration and boredom.

Physical and mental health consequences

Excessive exposure to social media and short-form audiovisual content has also been associated with sleep disturbances, low self-esteem, anxiety, depression and an increased risk of social isolation.

Experts point out that time spent on these platforms often replaces activities that are essential for psychological well-being, including rest, face-to-face social interaction and physical exercise. Among teenagers, excessive use may also contribute to social anxiety and sedentary lifestyles.

Warning signs for families

Indicators of problematic social media use may include irritability when device access is restricted, an inability to control screen time, neglect of schoolwork or personal responsibilities, and a loss of interest in hobbies previously enjoyed.

Other warning signs include increasing social withdrawal, a preference for digital interactions over in-person relationships, and the use of social media as a means of escaping real-life problems or negative emotions.

Preventing excessive use

Experts emphasize that thanks to the brain’s plasticity, many of these effects can be reduced or reversed if exposure is limited and engagement with real-world experiences is encouraged.

Recommended measures include setting clear limits on device use, promoting outdoor activities, sports and reading, modeling responsible technology habits, and maintaining open conversations with children and teenagers about the risks associated with excessive social media use.
