Google emphasizes the role of AI in Pixels to 'make users' lives easier'

Published on 2023-10-28

Michiel van Eldik, Vice President of Devices and Service Agreements for Google in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), has highlighted the role that Artificial Intelligence (AI) plays in the company's new Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro smartphones to "make users' lives easier." He referred to this technology as a differentiating element due to Google's experience in this field compared to its competitors.

In an interview granted to Europa Press, coinciding with the launch of Google's new generation of smartphones, the executive also celebrated the "great reception" the company's phones are receiving in Spain. Despite the modest sales figures, Van Eldik attributes this to the fact that distribution was exclusively online. He insisted that Google has a significant fan community and strong brand recognition in Europe.

For this new generation, the Pixels will also be distributed in Spain through the Orange operator, as well as through retailers such as El Corte Inglés and MediaMarkt. They hope this will help "meet the goals" the company has set for the country. However, for now, Spain is not among Google's priority markets, and some products, like the Google Pixel Fold, the company's first foldable phone, will not be marketed here for the time being.

In response to the question of whether the Pixels are ready to compete with Apple's iPhones, Van Eldik simply stated that Pixel is "the fastest-growing smartphone brand" in Google's key markets and "the only one that grew in units sold year over year."

Similarly, he emphasized the brand's commitment to offering durable technology. For the first time, they offer "seven years of software support for Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, with operating system updates, security updates, and periodic updates with new features."

"WE ARE ALWAYS EXPLORING A MULTITUDE OF TECHNOLOGIES"

As we saw earlier, Google also has faith in the future of foldable devices and takes the first step in this direction with Pixel Fold, already marketed in other markets. "We are always exploring a multitude of technologies. With Pixel Fold, we were able to create a smartphone experience that leverages the significant progress we have seen in Android for larger form factors," Van Eldik said.

"We have carefully designed the device to be usable and useful in all modes (folded, unfolded, desktop), and at the same time, we have incorporated all the excellent AI you have seen in our previous Pixel phones. From Call Assist to voice-to-text and even Live Translate, users will gain many experiences that can only be found on Pixel," adds the Vice President of Devices and Service Agreements for Google in EMEA.

Finally, Van Eldik talked about the evolution of their smartwatch, Pixel Watch 2, which incorporates "new health sensors, improved heart rate tracking, and improvements in personal security features," as well as a battery improvement to achieve "all-day autonomy."

At this point, when asked about Google's strategy with Fitbit (a company acquired by the tech giant in 2021 and still launching products under its brand), the executive explains that the brands have "different audiences" and that the Pixel Watch 2 is enriched with some of the services from Fitbit, which "motivate and support people in managing their holistic health and well-being."
