Meta will limit the appearance of recommended political content on Instagram and Threads

Published on 2024-02-12

Meta will limit the appearance of recommended political content in the main feeds, reels, and suggested users on Instagram and Threads, for those who do not want to see this type of content on a regular basis.

The company led by Mark Zuckerberg has shared its intention to change the approach they have towards political content on their social networks, with the aim of "preserving people's ability to choose" whether they want to interact with it and to "respect" those who are interested in these topics.

In this context, Meta has indicated that "over the next few weeks," it will stop recommending political content on Instagram and Threads, specifically in the explore section, reels, feed recommendations, and suggested users.

By political content, the company has referred to potentially related topics such as "laws, elections, or social issues," as stated in a post on their Instagram blog, where it noted that it does not want to "proactively recommend political content" from accounts that users do not follow.

However, as also specified by the head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, in a post on Threads, this new approach to political content "does not change the way content from accounts that users choose to follow is displayed," which will continue to appear in feeds as normal.

Following this line, for those users who wish to continue receiving recommendations for political content, a new feature has also been implemented with which they can control the limitation of content.

That is, although political content will generally no longer be recommended for all accounts, with this new feature, users can choose whether they wish the social network in question to limit this type of content or, conversely, to continue offering it as usual.

For its part, Meta has indicated that professional accounts on Instagram will be able to "verify their eligibility" to be recommended from the Account Status section, depending on whether they have recently published political content or not.

Similarly, if they have published political content and wish to be recommended, they can edit or delete such recent posts. They can also request a review if they disagree with Meta's decision to limit their recommendation due to the published content.

Finally, Meta has recommended "ceasing to publish this type of content for a period of time," so that accounts can be eligible to "be recommended again".
