Instagram will prioritize original content in recommendations

Published on 2024-05-04

The content recommendation system on Instagram has undergone a series of updates with which the company hopes to boost the distribution of original content from small creators.

The company has decided to remove from recommendations what is shared by aggregators, meaning those accounts that post original content from other creators. Sometimes these reposts cite the original author, but not always.

Instead, the recommendation algorithm will showcase original content, especially that which comes from small accounts, to increase its visibility, as explained by Meta to The Verge and TechCruch. This replacement will be notified to the creators of the original content.

This change in the algorithm will be accompanied by tags that identify the content that has been reposted and that link back to the original content.

Accounts that share memes and repeatedly repost content will also no longer appear in recommendations. Specifically, if it is detected that they repost content that does not improve with their own contributions more than ten times in the last 30 days.

This limitation will have an exception for accounts licensed to share posts from other content creators, as clarified by the company.

Additionally, Instagram has worked on a new ranking system for 'reels' recommendations. Instead of being based on user interaction with these short videos in vertical format, it will broaden distribution based on their sampling to different audiences.

This system will start by showing 'reels' to a small audience that may be interested in the content. Videos with the best performance will then be shown to a wider audience, and so on.

Although Instagram has announced these changes to the recommendation algorithm this Tuesday, they will begin to be implemented in the coming months.
