WhatsApp to integrate Google Translator to translate conversations within the app itself

Published on 2024-07-13

WhatsApp is developing a feature that will allow users to translate conversations and texts within the app itself through the integration of Google Translate, which will operate locally and maintain data privacy.

The platform plans to introduce new options aimed at improving accessibility and ease of use, while preserving the privacy of the information shared through it.

One of the latest features, already in the implementation phase, is the ability to automatically transcribe voice notes into text in up to five languages, as observed by WABetaInfo in the latest Android beta version.

This portal has now noticed a new feature for users of this operating system, in the 2.24.15.8 update of WhatsApp available through the Google Play Beta Program for testers.

This is a functionality that allows translating messages directly in the app, without the need to copy and paste the text to be translated into another language in another app or website dedicated to this purpose.

WABetaInfo has indicated that this function relies on Google Translator's live translation technology, which, by integrating into the app, keeps the privacy of the users' messages. This is because it will operate locally, i.e., without sending data to external servers.

Users will need to download language packages to enable this feature in the future, ensuring they have access to translations in the languages they choose at any time. For now, it is limited to certain languages, such as Hindi or English, although it is expected that the app will update to accommodate more.
