'Blue Screen of Death', the visible face of CrowdStrike's failure that has affected companies worldwide

Published on 2024-07-20

'Blue Screen of Death' has become the visible face of the update error of CrowdStrike's Falcon platform, which this Friday has affected numerous companies from various sectors around the world using Windows devices.

CrowdStrike is a cybersecurity firm specializing in endpoint protection (devices located at the end of a communication channel and connected to the network) within the context of cloud technology, aiming to stop security breaches.

Its main product is Falcon, a platform designed with a lightweight and simple architecture that amplifies cloud-based artificial intelligence and provides real-time protection and visibility of all the organization’s assets. Microsoft is one of its clients.

It was precisely a Falcon update that caused failures in Windows environments related to the Falcon Sensor, the agent where various security solutions are implemented on the terminal. This led to numerous computers around the world displaying the infamous 'blue screen of death'.

This is a way to notify of a Windows error, showing, as its name suggests, a blue screen and a brief indication of the detected problem that prevents the device from functioning properly, in this case due to the failure in CrowdStrike’s solution. Microsoft explains on its website that this blue screen typically appears "if a serious problem causes Windows to shut down or restart unexpectedly."
