Twelve Free Courses to Become a ‘Programming’ and Maker Environment ‘Expert’ from Scratch

Published on 2024-08-20

September: the time to return from summer to reality and start a new school year. Along with this come new challenges and skills that young students will need to acquire to successfully tackle the new academic year. One of the challenges in this new digital society is, undoubtedly, staying updated on technological skills to apply them in the classroom and in daily life. Knowledge of new trends in this regard will not only help students succeed in their courses but will also be key for their future, as these skills are also essential in the workplace.

In this context, the Orange Foundation offers a series of free courses to help young people enhance their skills. All of them can be found on Orange Digital Center, the free online course platform focused on acquiring digital skills.

“Today, acquiring digital training and knowledge is essential for students. Keeping up with new trends and methodologies will be crucial for classes, especially regarding digitization, which is increasingly important in the classroom and provides an exceptional way to boost their talent. Technology will accompany young people throughout their lives; that’s why it’s so important to understand and master it to create that differentiation in new generations that the system expects,” explains Daniel Morales, Director of Sustainability and Foundations at MASORANGE.

To Develop New Digital Skills

Sé + Digital is a free 6-week online course where you can develop digital skills to improve in professional activities, start a business, or do business from anywhere. Backed by MASORANGE’s experience in serving companies and freelancers and by the recognition and track record of the School of Industrial Organization EOI, which has 60 years of training professionals, the course covers topics ranging from digital economy to positioning strategies.

To Navigate the Internet Like Experts

To learn how to search for content on the Internet, access it easily, and understand its possible uses, we have the course Search, Access, and Use of Content on the Internet. In this 6-hour MOOC, taught by professors from the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM), you will learn about free content licenses, how to search for these contents, as well as how to cite and use them in daily life.

For Safer Use of Technologies

The course Safe and Responsible Use of ICT (Information and Communication Technologies), a MOOC with a 10-hour commitment, will allow us to learn to use these technologies more effectively. This training covers various topics, including digital identity, privacy management online, netiquette, and risks for teenagers online.

Programming for Beginners: Three Courses to Open the Doors to Development

The ODC course platform offers training that introduces students to programming in a simple and practical way. Among them (in SPOOC format, allowing each person to progress at their own pace), are the course ‘Introduction to App Inventor,’ where each user can design their own mobile app; the ‘Introduction to Arduino: First Steps in Programming’ course, which teaches the basics of the board and involves creating the first programming project with this language; or ‘Introduction to Scratch: First Steps in Programming,’ which explains the world of block-based programming. In MOOC format, the ODC platform offers ‘Introduction to Digital Design and Fabrication,’ focused on 2D vector design and 3D design or modeling.

Three Courses for Advanced Programming Users

The ODC presents other SPOOC courses, such as ‘App Inventor for Intermediate Users,’ which allows creating mobile apps for Android and iOS simply using blocks or code; ‘Scratch for Intermediate Users,’ to learn more about block-based programming; or ‘Arduino for Intermediate Users,’ to dive deeper into robotics. All these courses are designed for people who already have more advanced programming knowledge.

For Those with a More “Pro” Level

For the most advanced users who want to take the next step to become true ‘experts’ in programming and the maker world, the platform offers courses such as ‘Arduino and App Inventor for Advanced Users,’ where you learn to create projects connected with apps and open the doors to the so-called Internet of Things; or ‘Advanced Digital Fabrication,’ a 15-hour NOOC format course to become an expert in 3D printing and digital modeling.
