Microsoft reinvents itself with the Surface Book

Published on 2015-10-09

Microsoft aims to make its mark in Cupertino, or at least that's what can be inferred from the launch of its new Surface Book, the revolutionary new convertible laptop designed 100% by the Redmond giant, with which it challenges what has always been its biggest rival, first in the software realm - which it nearly monopolized for decades - and now it seems also in the field of high-performance hardware and design.

Its new calling card is very clear and directly targets Apple's jugular: the Surface Book is twice as fast as a MacBook Pro. Or at least, that's what Microsoft unabashedly claims. However, this isn't the only novelty of a machine that is destined to mark a turning point in the trajectory of the Seattle company.

The Surface Book bets on modularity: that is, it integrates a large 13.5" tablet with PixelSense technology and a resolution of 3000x2000 pixels, offering us a density of 267 ppi, and a backlit keyboard with two USB ports and a full SD card reader.

But the real key lies in the union: the keyboard incorporates a dedicated Nvidia GPU of the latest generation that adds power and autonomy to the device when connected. By separating the GPU from the rest of the components, Microsoft opens a door to upgrading the device by simply changing the keyboard. Thus, in the future, it would be enough to change this module to have more power.

Similarly, modularity allows for the keyboard to be placed behind the base or discarded altogether, enjoying one of the most powerful tablets on the market compatible with Microsoft's new stylus called the Surface Pen. It offers up to 1024 levels of pressure and is magnetic so that we can comfortably attach it to the device's frame.

As for the design, the magnesium finish of the Surface Book is reminiscent of the austere style of its apple rivals and demonstrates that Microsoft is serious about moving beyond the service stage to focus on its future as a hardware manufacturer.

The new Microsoft Surface Book with Windows 10 Pro operating system is now available for pre-order starting at $1499 for the model with a 128GB SSD, 8GB of RAM, and an Intel Core i5 processor. If we want the most powerful and complete option, with Core i7, Nvidia GPU, 16GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD, the price jumps to $2700.
