The WHO and TikTok collaborate to provide reliable information related to health and science

Published on 2024-09-28

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the social network TikTok have announced a collaboration to provide reliable information related to health and science through this platform for one year.

The WHO aims to increase its global reach by leveraging various social networks to promote health literacy, healthy behaviors, and actions in an increasingly digitized world.

It is well known that today, social networks are a considerable source of information among young people, greatly influencing health-related behaviors and decisions. It is estimated that 1 in 4 young adults resolves their doubts by seeking information on these platforms, especially TikTok.

The main problem with this practice is that people are increasingly subject to misinformation due to the spread of unreliable information on these digital channels. This new collaboration aims to address these challenges by promoting evidence-based content and fostering positive dialogues about health.

WHO's chief scientist, Dr. Jeremy Farrar, defines this collaboration as "a turning point" for social networks to become more socially responsible. He also states that the union of health and technology presents an "opportunity to reach people of all ages, wherever they are and whenever they wish to access."

Meanwhile, TikTok's Global Director of Trust and Safety in Partnerships and Outreach, Valiant Richey, points out that "millions of people turn to TikTok every day to share and find community in all areas of their lives, including their well-being, and we strive to ensure they can find truthful information on this important topic." Furthermore, he assures that TikTok is "delighted" to collaborate with the WHO's Fides network of health influencers to provide content related to mental well-being.

The WHO's Fides network has been mobilizing over 800 health content creators since 2020. The goal of this platform, which reaches 150 million people across different networks, is to counter misinformation and promote evidence-based content.

The collaboration aims to translate science-based information into understandable and accessible video content, with increased support for influencers through TikTok's creator training programs.
