93% of Europeans have used the Internet in the past three months

Published on 2024-12-17

93% of people aged between 16 and 74 years in the European Union (EU) reported having used the Internet during the past three months. Internet usage has steadily grown in the region, with an increase in the proportion of users in 2024 by 7 percentage points, up from 86% in 2019.

These are some of the data released this Tuesday by the EU's statistical office, Eurostat, which specified that the Internet was primarily used to communicate with others: 85% of people used the Internet to make phone calls, conduct video calls, or send instant messages, and 80% to send emails. The use of the Internet for communication has increased, and online calls and messaging have grown faster than email correspondence (with a difference of 14 and 7 percentage points higher compared to 2019, respectively).

Other popular activities reported included finding information about goods and services (75%), watching television or videos (73%), and online banking (67%).

In contrast, only 10% of people used the internet for online consultations or voting to define civic or political issues, 12% used it for learning activities in formal education, 16% expressed an opinion on civic or political issues on websites or social networks, 17% took an online course, and 17% participated in learning for private purposes.
