Amazon Fire TV Adds Dual Audio Accessibility Option for Simultaneous Listening via Headphones and Speakers

Published on 2024-12-20

Amazon has announced new accessibility-focused features for its Fire TV Omni Mini-LED television, including a new capability called Dual Audio, which allows a user with headphones to listen through them while their friends and family listen through the TV's speakers simultaneously.

This feature is aimed at users with hearing difficulties and to provide a communal experience. It is the result of work aimed at creating technology that "makes things more possible and promotes accessibility."

Thus, Amazon has updated these televisions by adding new streaming options for home entertainment and has announced that the Fire TV Omni Mini-LED is compatible with the Audio Streaming for Hearing Aids (ASHA) protocol, which sends the TV's audio directly to the user's headphones.

By expanding its compatibility with this standard to provide users with a more communal experience, it will soon feature Dual Audio, as explained by Amazon in a press release.

This feature will allow Fire TV customers with ASHA-enabled headphones to enjoy TV shows and movies together with friends and family. This means they can obtain high-quality audio in their headphones while other viewers listen through the speakers.

This experience will be available on the new Fire TV Omni Mini-LED series and, to enjoy it, users must access the device's Settings section, choose the 'Accessibility' option, and activate Dual Audio to pair compatible headphones with the TV.

Additionally, if the headphones are already paired with the TV, users should access their tab in the Settings menu, press the 'Output Mode' button, and select 'Dual Audio' to begin.

Amazon also stated that these televisions are expanding ASHA compatibility to include all behind-the-ear (BTE) headphones and Widex Moment in-the-channel (RIC) headphones through the brand's collaboration with WS Audiology (WSA).

This way, customers with Widex BTE and RIC headphones will be able to stream sound directly from ASHA-enabled Fire TV devices, including those in the Fire TV Omni Mini-LED series, Fire TV Omni QLED Series, Fire TV Cube, Fire TV 4-Series, Fire TV 2-Series, and Fire TV Omni Series, to their headphones.

Finally, regarding accessibility, the company has noted that QR codes printed in the TVs' Quick Start Guides now incorporate raised dots to be identified by visually impaired individuals.
