Meta’s founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, has announced the growth that the social networks developed by the company have experienced in recent months, highlighting Threads, which currently reaches a total of 320 million monthly active users (MAU) and aims to become "the leading debate platform" in 2025.
The tech company has presented its quarterly earnings report, where it emphasized that it continues to advance "at a good pace" in different areas such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its Meta AI assistant, mixed reality glasses, and the future of social networks.
Predicting that 2025 will be "a really important year" for the company, Zuckerberg shared on his personal Facebook profile the current state of its various communication platforms, insisting that Threads is its main bet.
Regarding this platform, the executive stated that he expects it to "continue its trajectory to become the leading debate platform and eventually reach one billion people in the coming years," as he explained in this post and as shared in an official document.
Additionally, he pointed out that Threads now has more than 320 million monthly active users (MAU) and records more than one million new sign-ups per day. Thus, he highlighted the platform's growth in recent months, providing figures since last summer.
On its first anniversary, which took place in July 2024, Threads had already surpassed 175 million active users per month. By December, nearly a year and a half after its launch in the United States—its arrival in Europe was delayed due to the Digital Markets Act (DMA)—it already had 300 million MAU.
Thus, Threads has grown by 20 million active users per month in just one month, a growth also driven by the massive migration of users from X to Meta’s services following its owner, Elon Musk, joining the Donald Trump administration.
It is also worth noting that during this time, the Threads development team has incorporated various features aimed at improving user experience, such as an enhanced search interface to easily find specific posts on the social network and a feature that allows users to share images and videos from other users' posts directly on their timelines without needing to repost them.
Zuckerberg also predicted a bright immediate future for WhatsApp, which he expects to "continue gaining market share and advancing to become the leading messaging platform in the United States, as it already is in much of the rest of the world." Currently, the app has more than 100 million monthly active users in the country alone.
Regarding its other services, the Meta CEO stated that his team will "see what happens with TikTok." "Regardless of that, I expect Reels on Instagram and Facebook to continue growing," he added. In this regard, it is worth remembering that, amid the uncertainty currently surrounding ByteDance’s platform, its team has opted to launch features similar to this application. It has restructured user profile interfaces, now displaying content vertically, and it now allows ‘reels’ of up to 90 seconds.
As for Facebook, Zuckerberg stated that more than 3 billion monthly active users use it and that Meta’s team is focused on "increasing its cultural influence." "I’m excited to see the original Facebook return this year," he said, without providing further details about this plan.
