Around 45% of Spaniards claim to have used generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) at least once, ten percentage points more than in 2023, according to an international Ipsos survey for Google, published this Thursday.
The European average for generative AI usage is 42%, three points below Spain, where citizens say they use this tool not only for entertainment but also to support their work, personal projects, and education.
In Spain, the percentage of optimists about AI's potential (51%) now surpasses those concerned about its negative impact (49%). The previous year, enthusiasm in Spain was at 46%, while concerns stood at 54%.
These figures align with global results, which show that worldwide AI usage has increased to 48%, with enthusiasm surpassing concerns (57% vs. 50% in 2023) and worries dropping (43% vs. 50% in 2023).
Moreover, a greater number of Spaniards compared to the previous year believe that AI will positively change the economy (from 30% to 37%) and that AI's impact on jobs and industries in the next five years will be beneficial (from 48% to 54%).
Concerns about job disruption have declined compared to last year, with only 12% expecting to look for a new role due to AI (down from 17% in 2023).
Spaniards are also more hopeful about AI’s ability to benefit society by driving scientific and medical advancements: seven in ten expect AI to have a positive impact on science (69%) and medicine (75%).
Personal Assistance
Personally and professionally, people believe AI will benefit them and are interested in exploring AI applications that can help them communicate, think, and execute tasks more effectively. For example, 60% of Spanish respondents say they are excited about using AI for personal assistance, such as online shopping, schedule planning, or travel organization.
Professionally, more than half (64%) of AI users in Spain use it at work, not only for drafting emails but also for problem-solving (77%), brainstorming (74%), summarizing long documents, or analyzing complex information (72%).
Additionally, they see AI not just as a tool to boost productivity but as a way to operate at a higher and more strategic level. Among the most important AI applications for the workforce, 81% prioritize using AI to help people work with complex data or systems, and 80% for enhancing business problem-solving.
With growing optimism, people are more open to an innovation-friendly environment to fully leverage AI’s opportunities. Spaniards believe that promoting advancements in science, medicine, and other fields through AI innovation (55%) is more important than protecting potentially affected industries through regulation (45%).
Lino Cattaruzzi, General Manager of Google Spain and Portugal, stated that "AI is starting to work its magic on a large scale, making people's lives easier and better. The survey results show that the more people use these tools, the more excited they are about the possibilities and the personal, professional, and scientific advancements ahead."
