Microsoft plans to improve the Optical Character Recognition (OCR) function of its Windows Snipping Tool, enabling users to copy text directly from an image without having to take a screenshot.
Snipping Tool is a Windows 11 application that allows users to take screenshots, either of the entire screen or a selected portion, modify the snapshot, and share or print it.
Among its many functions, this app includes OCR technology, which can recognize text displayed in an image capture and allows users to extract it for copying and pasting into, for example, a document being written, without the need to type it manually.
Now, Windows is enhancing this OCR function for the Snipping Tool, allowing users to extract text directly from an image without first needing to take a screenshot.
As noted by Windows analyst PhantomOfEarth and shared in a post on X (formerly Twitter), users will simply need to activate the Snipping Tool and select the "Text Extractor" option. They can then choose the area of the screen containing the desired text or use the full-screen function.
Once the OCR function is activated, users can select the text displayed on the screen and copy it to paste it into the desired document or service.
Currently, the text extraction option is only available within the editing options of a screenshot in the Snipping Tool. However, with this update, Windows is adding the "Text Extractor" option directly to the toolbar at the top of the screen when Snipping Tool is activated, alongside the existing options to crop images or videos.
For now, this feature is being rolled out to some Windows 11 users.
