Google has announced that it has begun transitioning from Google Assistant to Gemini on mobile devices, a service that will soon arrive on Android smartphones and later on tablets, cars with Android Auto, and other devices.
The company stated in a press release that this change aims to offer a new type of assistance that is only possible "with the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI)," according to Brian Marquardt, Senior Director of Product Management for Gemini.
Google Assistant was launched in 2016 with features such as natural language processing and voice recognition technology, two capabilities that allowed users to "get help from Google in a more natural way."
Almost a decade later, the emergence of generative AI, which "is transforming the way we interact with technology," has led Google to modify its service and redesign its assistant to make it "the most useful in the world."
While "millions of people" have already switched from Assistant to Gemini in their daily lives, it will become the default on Android phones in the coming months, as is already the case with Pixel 9 devices. By the end of 2025, the classic Google Assistant will no longer be available on most smartphones and will also be removed from app stores.
Google also announced that it will update tablets, cars with Android Auto, and accessories such as headphones and watches to Gemini. Additionally, the Gemini experience will extend to home devices like speakers, displays, and televisions.
Finally, Google has updated the Gemini app to support more requested features, such as music playback, setting timers, and executing actions from the lock screen.
The company also reminded users that its AI includes features like Gemini Live, for smooth and multimodal conversations, and Deep Research, which "turns Gemini into a personal research assistant."
