Europeans are more willing than ever to consider purchasing a refurbished smartphone, as shown by the sixth edition of the Recommerce Barometer, presented by this company and Vodafone at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
In 2023, the global market for second-hand smartphones expanded to 309 million units and is expected to reach over 431 million units by 2027.
More than 43% of Europeans already own a second-hand smartphone, up from 42% last year, demonstrating that it remains a key point for mobile phone customers. Despite inflationary pressures on consumers, the study suggests that 35% of Europeans intend to renew their current smartphone next year, with 27 million devices sold. In total, more than 52% of Europeans confess they are willing to buy a refurbished one in the future.
The study, conducted by Kantar, analyzed the consumer opinion in the EU across twelve major European countries, including Ireland and Portugal for the first time.
Demand for professionally refurbished devices is also growing. More than 60% of consumers surveyed in markets such as Romania and Spain state they intend to purchase a refurbished device. In consolidated markets like France, refurbished smartphones already represent up to 15% of the total retail market share, and more than 35% of people have already purchased a refurbished one.
Nick Dutch, Global Head of Device Lifecycle Services at Vodafone, stated that "customers are now considering refurbished devices more than ever to be able to get a high-value phone, which is better for the planet than buying a new one. Buying a refurbished phone from Vodafone helps customers get the phone they want for less money and with more peace of mind."
ENVIRONMENTAL REASONS
Given that some new models of premium smartphones cost more than 1,000 euros at retail, European consumers continued to cite affordability (67%) as their primary reason for choosing a refurbished device at retail. This trend was more prevalent in Portugal, France, and Romania (over 70%).
Environmental reasons were the second most important motive for purchasing refurbished smartphones (39%), suggesting that consumers appreciate the benefits of refurbished devices compared to buying new ones. Purchasing a refurbished one saves about 50 kg of CO2e - 20% or less than a new equivalent manufacture - and avoids the need to extract 164 kg of raw materials.
Other reasons include the warranty (27%), suggesting growing confidence in purchasing refurbished devices through trusted brands, buying high-end models (31%), and after-sales service guarantee (18%).
