Facebook now allows viewing vertical format videos in full screen

Published on 2024-04-06

Meta has launched new video playback features on Facebook, such as full-screen viewing for vertical format videos, the slider control option to jump to the most interesting part of the video, or more relevant video recommendations in the main 'Feed' and the Video tab.

The company led by Mark Zuckerberg has announced new video playback features with which it aims to boost the Facebook platform as "the home of all kinds of videos," in addition to offering content creators "more opportunities to reach additional audiences."

One of these new features is the ability to view videos in full screen, whether in vertical or horizontal format. According to Meta, previously, depending on the video's length or where it was being viewed, this content was displayed in a "Feed type" player, that is, within the frame of the usual post.

However, with the new function, when playing a video from any part of the Facebook app, it will automatically open in full-screen format and oriented vertically.

If it's a horizontal format video, although initially displayed vertically, it can be switched to landscape format by pressing the 'full screen' icon. This is a new feature with which Meta makes the video playback format similar to its other social network, Instagram.

Following this line, Facebook has introduced new options to facilitate video viewing, allowing users to skip playback to the part that interests them the most, through the slider located at the bottom of the player.

Additionally, controls have been implemented to rewind or fast-forward playback by ten seconds, as well as to pause the video.

Another point highlighted by Meta is that it will offer improved recommendations on Facebook for videos of all durations. According to what has been indicated, these will be videos more relevant based on the users' interests and will be shown both in the main Feed tab and in the Video tab.

As exemplified, the social network will recommend a video about inspiration for a quick daily makeup routine in 'reel' format, since it is shorter and lighter content. On the other hand, for a video about DIY home improvements made by experienced owners, it will opt for recommending a longer tutorial video.

As detailed in a statement on its blog, the new video playback features are now available on the Facebook app for both iOS and Android devices in the United States and Canada, and will be rolled out globally "in the coming months."
