Google Drive now summarizes changes recorded in shared documents after seven days of inactivity

Published on 2024-06-11

Google has developed a new feature for Drive aimed at helping users keep track of their shared files by sending an email summarizing the activity recorded on this platform after 7 days of inactivity.

Google Drive is a service that allows users to save and share files and folders from a mobile device, tablet, or computer, and integrates with native collaboration applications such as Docs, Sheets, and Slides.

The tech company has announced a new functionality for this service focused on tracking the shared files of Drive through an email that summarizes the activity recorded in this storage space. This update to its service takes into account the time the user has not accessed Drive so that, if during 7 days they have not logged in and have several files shared with other users, Google will send an email reminder summarizing the documents shared with others.

The firm, which believes this feature to be "particularly useful if [the user] has had a busy week or has just returned to work after some time away," noted that the summary will include information on unseen shared files and a link to 'See more activity' on the platform. Next to each collaborative document, Google will indicate the person who shared it and the days that have passed since it was shared. Additionally, the name of the file owner and the comments assigned to the user will be displayed.

The company commented that this feature, which has already begun to be implemented for all Workspace customers, will be enabled by default. Those who choose to disable it will need to click on the 'Unsubscribe here' option, located at the bottom of the email.
