72.8% of Spaniards (more than seven out of ten) are in favor of minors not being able to use a smartphone until they are 16 years old. By age groups, those over 65 years old (83.4%) are the most supportive of this measure, followed by the population between 55 and 64 years old (72.6%), young people between 25 and 34 years old (73.8%), and Spaniards between 35 and 44 years old (71.6%). Regarding gender, there is a significant difference, as 79.4% of women compared to 65.7% of men state that they support this initiative.
These are some of the conclusions of the IMOP-Berbés survey, which conducted a telephone interview with 684 people over 18 years old from December 12 to 19. 51.5% of respondents stated that when choosing Christmas gifts, they prioritize educational materials such as books or board games that require imagination, 38.9% prefer to purchase clothing or school supplies, among other things, to meet needs, and 23.9% opt for board games. On the other hand, only 7.3% lean towards new technologies such as computers, mobile phones, or tablets.
According to its proponents, the study delves into the factors that most influence the selection of gifts for the youngest after the publication of a report prepared by a committee of experts analyzing minors' exposure to mobile devices. Some of the recommendations for using these types of devices include avoiding screen use until the age of 6, using analog phones (without internet access) until 16 years old, and limiting the use of mobile phones by adults in front of children.
Furthermore, regarding minors not being able to access screens until six years old, 83.6% stated that they agree.
As for the extent to which they are concerned about the possible consequences that using mobile devices, tablets, among others, may have on the vision of children and adolescents, 47.5% of participants feel very concerned and 37.2% fairly concerned, compared to 8.3% who are slightly concerned and 4.1% who are not concerned at all.
By gender, there is a significant difference: 61.7% of women compared to 32% of men indicate that they think about the possible effects that using electronic devices may have on vision. Regarding age groups, participants between 45 and 54 years old (53%) are the most concerned, followed by those between 35 and 44 years old (52.1%) and young people between 18 and 24 years old (49.6%).
