Xbox has introduced Copilot for Gaming, an AI-powered assistant designed to enhance user experience as a "personalized gaming companion." It will help users access games faster, improve their skills, and offer various other features.
Microsoft aims to integrate its advancements in AI technology with the Copilot assistant into the Xbox gaming experience, planning to offer a virtual assistant that guides users through their games.
Specifically, Copilot for Gaming is designed to assist players with personalized recommendations, game setting suggestions, helpful training to enhance skills, and even support in connecting with other users and gaming friends.
Xbox has announced that Copilot for Gaming will first be available on the Xbox mobile app, with plans to expand it to consoles and other devices in the future. Additionally, it has been designed to "be there when needed" to help complete tasks, "but not interfere when it is not required," according to the company’s statement.
The assistant will accompany players during their gaming sessions and provide real-time answers to their questions about a specific game, offering relevant information, tips, and guides to help overcome challenges in difficult levels. This will be possible thanks to an in-game assistance function, which will soon be integrated into Copilot for Gaming, allowing interaction with the player using natural language.
As demonstrated in an Xbox showcase video, Copilot for Gaming will be able to answer user questions about creating items in Minecraft. Additionally, the assistant will analyze the game environments displayed on screen, guiding the player by, for example, indicating where to find materials needed to craft items.
Another challenge Copilot for Gaming seeks to address is time management, helping users spend less time searching for, downloading, or updating their games. It also provides a personalized experience, offering new game recommendations based on user preferences or reminding them of previously played but unfinished titles.
However, Xbox has also emphasized that, while the assistant provides tips and recommendations, the player retains full control, deciding how and when to interact with Copilot to avoid unwanted interruptions. "It’s not just about AI showing up to help, but about showing up at the right moment," stated Fatima Kardar, Xbox’s Corporate Vice President for Gaming AI.
With all this in mind, players participating in the Xbox Insider program will be able to test Copilot for Gaming "soon" and share their feedback to "help shape the product’s direction," initially on mobile devices.
