Young People Aged 25 to 34, Most Affected by Cyber Scams, According to EAE Business School Study

Published on 2024-10-15

Young people between 25 and 34 years old are the most affected age group (61.3%) by cyber scams in Spain, according to a study by EAE Business School on cybercrime in Spain, published this Monday.

"Their massive use of technology for studying, working, or leisure makes them more vulnerable. Especially Generation Z, who, being digital natives, consume, inform themselves, and communicate using technology, social networks, and AI," explains the author, Jordi Ferrer.

47.4% of Spaniards claim to have suffered a scam or attempted scam in the past year.

93.7% of those surveyed are very or quite concerned that, due to artificial intelligence, a time will come when it will not be possible to distinguish whether what we see on the internet is real or not.

60% of Spaniards acknowledge having "little or no" knowledge about internet security and personal data protection.

In the first six months of 2024, 237,240 cases of cybercrime have been recorded in Spain, representing a 10% increase compared to the same period in 2023.

According to the Sociological Research Center (CIS), 93.7% of citizens are very concerned about the impact of artificial intelligence (AI), especially due to the increasing difficulty of distinguishing between real and fake on the Internet.

In this regard, Spain is at a crossroads concerning cybersecurity. Although Madrid and Barcelona account for nearly 30% of reported cases, the impact of cybercrime extends throughout the entire territory. The report highlights that, despite these figures, only a minority of companies invest significantly in digital security measures.

The report highlights how technological advancement has been a catalyst for cybercrime. According to the National Cyber Security Index (NCSI) 2023, the best-positioned European countries in cybersecurity are Belgium, Lithuania, and Estonia, with Spain ranking 10th. Additionally, the Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) 2024 places Spain among the eurozone countries with the best cybersecurity systems, alongside leaders like Estonia and the United Kingdom.
